Colonial Continuities: The Struggle for Freedom of Movement Through the Lens of Time

@Kampnagel Hamburg: with Şeyda Kurt, Prof. Nikita Dhawan, Dr. Céline Barry, David Yambio, Mustafa Ahmed, de:criminalize, Tsafrir Cohen, Alina Buchberger, Valeria Hänsel, and Dr. Kerem Schamberger

To this day, European migration policy is shaped by colonial continuities. The deaths at Europe’s external borders and the high number of refugees in prisons bear witness to this legacy.

The right to freedom of movement remains a privilege for a few, as migration continues to be criminalized. Refugees are imprisoned everywhere – on Crete alone, more than one hundred young people from Sudan are incarcerated. Their only alleged offense: entering the EU “illegally” and supposedly having helped others while fleeing. Together, we oppose this criminalization and advocate for the right to freedom of movement. Through the Freedom of Movement Fund, medico international and de:criminalize support refugees who are unlawfully detained or who must defend themselves in court.

The work of the Fund is the starting point for this event, which seeks new forms of solidarity in the face of a rightward shift in society and the growing disenfranchisement of refugees at Europe’s external borders. It also looks back at history in order to expose colonial continuities.

We bring activists to the stage who have overcome Europe’s walls and are fighting here for the right to freedom of movement, scholars who shed light on the continuities of colonial practices, and allies in solidarity. With performance, film, and music.

After the event, we head to Buttclub St. Pauli for MASTIKA SOUNDS MEETS FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT FUND – SOLIDARITY PARTY! Doors open at 10:30 pm.
