Fund for freedom of movement

Since 2024, medico has been supporting our work, and together, we launched the “Fund for Freedom of Movement.”

We stand for the right to leave and the right to stay, the right to asylum, and the right to build a new life. These rights are increasingly under threat. People migrating are being criminalized for crossing borders and for supporting one another on their journey.

Thousands of people are imprisoned in Europe and along migration routes from the Middle East and Africa. They fled persecution, war, poverty, and exploitation—yet their border crossing and the accusation of aiding others became their downfall. They are charged with “facilitating unauthorized entry”—accused of smuggling and other offenses, such as endangering lives, causing a ship to capsize, or being part of a criminal organization.

The Fund for Freedom of Movement provides support to people who are arrested and criminalized along migration routes to Europe. It primarily assists refugees who are imprisoned or facing prison sentences and cannot afford legal representation.
