Documentary Escaping Libya’s Detention Industry / English and Arabic with English subtitles
Afterwards: Talk on “Libya’s Detention Industry and Italy’s Complicity: European Migration Deals as Crimes Against Humanity” with David Yambio, Phoebe Walton, and Allison West / Moderation: Julia Winkler / English
The Berlin premiere of the documentary Escaping Libya’s Detention Industry will be followed by a discussion on international crimes committed against migrants and refugees in Libya and the Mediterranean. It will address the role of European border-externalization deals – like the Italy-Libya Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) – in furthering these crimes, and the urgent need for European accountability and policy change.
Escaping Libya’s Detention Industry brings together the testimonies of survivors, forensic research and innovative aesthetics to convey what European policies deliberately obscure: the systematic abuse of racialized humans, particularly those on the move, in Libyan detention. By centering survivor expertise, the film counters abstract debates about “safe third countries” or “migration management” and makes visible the violence normalized by Europe’s approach.
