Watch here the Instagram live of @freehumanitarians
On World Refugee Day, we went live in conversation with Free Humanitarians to shed light on how asylum seekers in Europe are facing prison sentences of up to 355 years, simply for seeking safety. We explored how current EU anti-smuggling policies are being used to criminalise survival — and what we can do in solidarity.
Key points from the conversation (in following clips)
🔴 Refugees on Trial ➡️ Learn about the Sudanese boys on trial in Greece as ‘smugglers’ for fleeing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Case supported directly by de:criminalize
🔴 What are the so-called “crimes”? Read the Picum report on the criminalisation of migration & solidarity in the EU
🔴 Plea deals reveal deep injustice in European courts ⚠️
🔴 EU border militarisation is incompatible with the right to freedom of movement 🌏
💡What can we do to stand in solidarity?
We must challenge the narratives that are allowing EU states to pour millions of euros into militarising their borders, designed to punish and criminalise innocent people on the move, instead of protecting them. ✊
