Tenerife, 24 June 2026 by Ines Marco – spanish below
On 17 June 2021, a boat capsized off the coast of Órzola, in the north of Lanzarote. Five people lost their lives. Five years later, between 15 and 22 June 2026, we took part of the CommemorAction in the Canary Islands, organised by our comrades of Alarm Phone and the Lanzarote Network of Solidarity with people on the move. CommemorAction has two objectives: to ensure we do not forget those killed and disappeared at the borders, and to expose those responsible for their deaths. We were in Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and El Hierro. We held CommemorActions there, naming those who are no longer with us, standing in solidarity with those left behind, pointing out those responsible, but also sharing experiences and knowledge, and organising ourselves. We were in the places where shipwrecks took place, in ports, cemeteries and in camps for people on the move. We met survivors of the border regime and activist groups. We put our thoughts and feelings into words following a very powerful experience, one that has been full of pain, rage and hope. To share with those who could not be there, a little glimpse of what it meant. And, hopefully, to spread the flame.
With a heavy heart and the fist raised high
Having joined our comrades from Alarm Phone at the CommemorAction in the Canary Islands we would like to share some reflections on what we have observed, but also on what we have recalled and built during this week. We are deeply grateful for the invitation from our comrades. They have given us the opportunity to not only understand and connect more deeply with the violence, pain and suffering inflicted upon those who survive, die, disappear or are imprisoned whilst travelling along the Atlantic route. Simultaneously, it allowed us us to be part of their CommemorAction political initiative of which, as we have seen, succeeds in sowing justice, hope, dignity and power in the spaces and territories—both physical and symbolic—that the violence of border regimes seeks to fill with death, humiliation and despair.
The CommemorAction has shown us how to re-signify and nourish, even if only partially, the body-territories that the border regime ravages every bloody day. We have joined those who rebel, those who build strategies, to take flight and overcome the walls. But we have also honoured, and commemorated through our words and memories, those who did not make it – not because they were not strong, but because the border regime’s thirst for blood and hunger for flesh is never ending.
Together, we have remembered – for to forget is to die twice – those who disappeared and lost their lives in their struggle, on their journey, towards their freedom. We have sought to share in the grief, to place a hand on the shoulder of those who remain, to stand by their side. We have also felt their hands holding us up when it was we whose strength was failing. We have shed our tears, which have joined the rivers of tears of those who could no longer enjoy the pleasure of living alongside their loved ones. Perhaps, in this way, the water will reach its destination with greater strength, with greater fury, and less alone. Perhaps, in this way, it will break through the barriers. Perhaps, in this way, it will nourish the seeds lying in wait beneath the earth.
We have raised our voices so that those who, in their quest for freedom, have been imprisoned and accused of being the “boat drivers”, may hear us. So that they know we are organising ourselves to come and find them, to be able to stand by them. Because suffering an injustice in solitude, behind walls – once again behind walls – is far too much to endure. We have spoken with those who are about to be accused, with those who are about to be pressured into incriminating their fellow travellers, alongside those who survived the deadly journey to Fortress Europe. We have seen them in freedom, and we would so much like no one to rob them of that freedom, and we would so much like it to be restored to those from whom it has already been stolen. We raise our voices, we come together, because these are our tools for exposing the endless violence and the murders—unfortunately countless—committed by the European Union. To point the finger at and expose those who murder with one hand whilst, with the other, imprison those who survive their massacres.
We have witnessed the appalling treatment inflicted on people travelling along the Atlantic Route. Institutional and social violence, physical and emotional violence, to which both those who survive and those who go missing or die are subjected. Both those who travel and those who form part of their Life circles. Despite the efforts of those at a local level who refuse, to varying degrees and in different ways, to participate in the total dehumanisation of those who travel, the current situation in the Canary Islands is extremely severe. The alleged lack of resources does not justify the normalisation of the systematic violation of every fundamental right. The lack of resources to guarantee dignified conditions of Life or Death for those who survive and for those who die on the Atlantic route is a conscious political decision. A reflection of a society that does not prioritise Life – especially the lives of people on the move and racialised people – but rather deliberately extinguishes, imprisons or mistreats it.
The Spanish state bears undeniable responsibility for this reality. So do the other member states of the European Union. This lack of resources is yet another way of stealing and plundering the bodies and territories of those who are displaced. Once again, as history has relentlessly repeated, what belongs to them is being taken away: their lands, their resources, their perspectives, their truths, their loved ones, their freedom – everything that is rightfully theirs. People not only have the right to migrate, but also the right to reclaim the resources, dreams and pleasures that were historically stolen from them to build and sustain the colonial capitalist project. Instead of facing up to their historical responsibilities, the European Union continue to dehumanise them, lock them up in detention centres, concentration camps and prisons; prevent them from attending the funerals of those they love, from being buried with dignity in accordance with their religious beliefs; and blame them for the deaths of those they have travelled with.
Witnessing this reality pains us and infuriates us profoundly, but we know that the water, fire and smoke we release is movement and strength. That we are Nature. We are honoured to be part of and to stand alongside an immense human movement that is moving forward, that is unstoppable, that bursts down walls, that claims dignity, that claims Life, and that collectively opposes the reproduction and advance of colonialism—disguised as borders—which has never disappeared and which has nourished and fuelled the fascism that the white left is only now beginning to see.
With the promise never to forget, to look after one another,
With the promise to keep the flame alive,
Not to give up,
Grateful for this CommemorAction,
We’ll keep meeting up to weave,
That’s for sure.

Commemoraction 2026
